APPALACHIAN WINDMILL MUSEUM
![]() Night Time RenderingYou see here the tower in context to its neighboring wind turbine. The objective was to design a building that established a similar essence as the wind turbines. | ![]() Design ProcessThe tower rises from the ground to meet the approximate height of the windmills to provide an observatory and exhibition spaces at the top. Below the tower is an elongated excavation that provides the program for the museum. Among many design decisions was the choice to rotate the tower to suggest it is twisting in the wind along with aluminum panels that pivot at the center to rotate with each gust. | ![]() Section and Floor Plans | ![]() MuseumCast in place circular concrete walls encase old turbine machinery to propose as artwork rather than artifact. |

This entry was a finalist for a 2 day AIA competition among students of the Northern Virginia area. The competition asked students to design a windmill museum that would be located on the Appalachian mountain range along with 20 wind turbines. This design merely focuses on capturing the mannerisms of wind visually for spectators to observe.
